We are pleased to present the 3rd ISODARCO Course, dedicated to the theme: “Peace and Stability in the Era of Militarized AI and Cyber Conflicts: New Challenges and Risks,” which will take place in Italy, in Volterra (Pisa), from August 6 to 13, 2025.
The 2025 ISODARCO Summer Course will focus on the emerging risks to peace and stability, and the related challenges for international governance, stemming from the increasing militarization of advanced information technologies.
Topics will include the geopolitical, diplomatic, legal, and ethical implications of the risks and challenges posed by the militarized use of artificial intelligence and cyber warfare, particularly in relation to nuclear stability and non-proliferation, regional conflicts, the law of armed conflict, and international cooperation on arms control and disarmament.
Introductory lectures will provide non-specialists with essential scientific, technological, and socio-economic background, making this summer course self-contained and accessible to participants with diverse educational backgrounds and academic qualifications.
Within the broad landscape of information technologies and their military applications, particular attention will be given to AI-based decision-support systems for command and control, autonomous weapons systems and their technological precursors, nuclear command and control and its cyber vulnerabilities, the escalation of cyber hostilities and the risk of spillover into other domains of warfare, the accelerated pace of AI-enhanced warfare, and the related challenge of preserving human control over battlefield operations.
